RMJM has won an international design competition for a new skyscraper in China, shaped like a fish

The practice’s Shenzhen office defeated an unnamed shortlist of international firms to land the prestigious riverside projectin Doumen, Zhuhai.

According to a statement from the practice, the ‘fish jumping’ design was inspired by local water culture and symbolizes ‘the prosperity and rapid transformation of the city’.

The 4,563m² mixed-use tower is part of a riverfront improvement scheme on land surrounding the intersection of two rivers in Doumen.

The 93 metre-tall skyscraper will be divided into three main sections. The podium will feature cafés, shops and restaurants.

The middle section will feature interactive leisure facilities and an external staircase leading visitors up to a viewing platform above.

RMJM’s ‘parametric’ design features 12 two-dimensional curves and a sub-frame holding around 1,400 aluminum cladding panels.
