RMJM staff in Hong Kong move to Aedas

As many as 35 workers at RMJM’s Hong Kong office have moved across to work for Aedas, it has emerged

The staff transfer follows the recent publication of allegations by a principal of the office against company chief executive Peter Morrison.

Announcing the ‘major’ restructuring of its Hong Kong operation today, Peter Morrison said:  ‘There have inevitably been departures, as there have been at every single major firm, but I am extremely confident about the future.

‘We have weathered unprecedented global economic challenges over the past two and a half years with the vast bulk of our architectural talent intact.’

The loss of staff to Aedas, which is understood to include the studio’s entire research and development team, took place in the weeks preceding the publication of Catherine Sui’s tirade against the company.

The revelation comes as RMJM unveiled a raft of 10 recently won international projects in its  $125 million pipeline of work.

The projects are:

Meridian Varyan, Turkey - 3.7m sq ft mixed-use development in the Atasehir district of Istanbul

Ozyegin University, Turkey - Campus for a new university on a sloping site in Istanbul

Washington University School of Engineering, United States - 480,000 sq ft research facility for the St Louis’ Danforth Campus

Baha Mar, Bahamas - $1.6bn mixed-use beachfront resort in Nassau

University Medical Centre at Princeton, United States - 638,000 sq ft hospital on a 20 hectare site in Plainsboro

Motorworld, UAE - Car superstore on a 350 hectare site east of Abu Dhabi

Oman Conference Centre, Oman - Mixed-use development including exhibition space, offices and a shopping centre

Yas Southern Marina, UAE - Mixed use precinct of the Yas Island development in Abu Dhabi

Sudan Projects, Sudan - Four blocks of apartments and a 220-bed hotel in the Mushaireb District

Naseej Housing Design Competition, Bahrain - Design competition for an affordable, high quality and environmentally-friendly home.

Further early-stage projects are located in Yemen, Sudan, Bahrain, Turkey, Saudi Arabia and the UAE, the company said.

In a recent communication to staff Morrison admitted the company had witnessed ‘two very difficult years’ and confirmed two group executives had been despatched to tackle problems in the Hong Kong office.

Ed Jimenez, a senior architect at RMJM’s New York office, recently quit working for the company after sending a 900-word tirade to the chief executive, it has been reported.

  • Projects are just PR pap.
Given the current climate and middle east unrest can only see the USA projects going forward.
Suspect RMJM trying to use bells and whistles to deflect the current crisis they are in - I wonder just how bad it really is for them!
