The firm officially moved into its Manhattan studio, which will be home to group chief executive Peter Morrison, as work began on the company’s $21.5 million centre of Excellence for Research and Applied Sciences at the Cheyney University of Pennsylvania.
However according to The Scotsman, the company owes more than £500,000 worth of taxes to New York state.
RMJM has 12 offices across the world, including London, Dubai, Istanbul and Hong Kong.
Morrison this month told staff the troubled practice was in ‘a strong position to quickly return to growth’.
His upbeat email came as the global group posted an £11 million pre-tax loss for the year to April 2011 – compared with a £1.6 million profit in the prior year.
The group also saw turnover plummet from £81.2 million in 2010 to £71.6 million last year.
Average headcount across the group dropped by 2,985 people in the year to April 2011.
Morrison said this week: ‘RMJM is delighted to announce the opening of our new office in midtown Manhattan, which represents the culmination of months of planning by our New York team.
‘The work we are doing in the New York Studio spans the globe from Russia, Singapore, Korea and the Middle East to here in the United States.
’At 622 Third Avenue we sit in the heart of the largest concentration of architectural, design and technology companies in the World.’
