Rivington unveils brass

[FIRST LOOK + PROJECT DATA + PLANS] Rivington Street Studio has won the green light for this extension and overhaul of a 1930s primary school in Hackney, east London

The £6 million Orchard Primary School project involves enlarging classrooms in the existing three-storey building together with a new brass-clad addition which will house a ‘flexible learning zone’ combining ICT, library and resource functions.

According to the practice: ‘The building’s massing evolved through extensive three-dimensional study of its relationship to the existing school and the wider urban context [Well Street]. The latter was a key ingredient for the school to enhance its image within the community and one of the decisions behind choosing brass as the cladding material.’

Work is expected to start on the project, which attained BREEAM ‘very good’ in pre-assessment, in June this year.
