Rings a bell? Studio Meda's smaller Bankside bike shed

  • Comment

[First look] Studio Meda has completed this competition-winning bike shed scheme in Bankside, London

The studio won an Architecture Foundation-run competition to design the £10,000 prototype in March last year (AJ 24.03.2011).

Proving space for between 20 and 25 bicycles, the 4m by 7.2m competition-winning design originally featured 24 galvanised steel columns, cross bars and a plywood roof with asphalt waterproofing.

However, following design development, the project was shrunk to 3.6m by 6m and now has just 12 columns and a steel sheeting roof.

The prototype was installed on a site close to the London School of Economics in Bankside during the London Festival of Architecture in June. A commercial product based on the design is planned to launch this month.

Studio Meda saw off rival schemes by Atmos Studio, Dream Studio, Quinn Architecture and Tughela Gino Architecture with Gabby Shawcross to win the commission for business improvement district Better Bankside.
