Rick Mather completes £5 million Ashmolean Museum extension

  • Comment

[First look + project data] Rick Mather Architects has completed the second phase of its Ashmolean Museum overhaul project in Oxford

The completion comes almost two years after the studio took the wraps off its Stirling Prize-shortlisted £61 million refurbishment of the 1845 Charles Robert Cockerell-designed building.

The 1,016m² Egypt Galleries project involved the refurbishment of existing gallery buildings and the restoration of Stanley Hall & Easton and Robertson’s 1939 Griffith Gallery.

The newly re-opened Ashmolean Museum Egypt Galleries showcases the museum’s collection of Egyptian artefacts including the 680 BC Taharqa Shrine from Kawa.

In 1999 Rick Mather Architects was appointed to masterplan the museum’s expansion. The revamped museum received 1.2 million visitors in its first year.
