Richard Murphy Architects has completed this hotel and offices project in Aberdeen for developer Hazledene Estates
This privately funded £75 million project comprises a six-storey office building of 13,766m², and a seven-storey hotel of 8,775m².
The design stands in contrast to Aberdeen’s architectural scene, whilst the materials are locally sourced. Aberdonian granite dominates the ground floor exterior, whilst further up, the stone gives way to curtain walling with a glazing structure. The upper levels feature zinc and glass clad walls and bay windows distinctively angled.
The facade’s glazed design intends to bring a high level of natural day-light into the building; and this is complemented by south-facing sun terraces accessed via folding glass walls. The area around the front entrance has also been landscaped and planted to form a public realm.
Richard Murphy Architects intend the project to play a major part in the redevelopment of an area in the western end of the city centre. The site was previously fallow, and before that a disused petrol station and derelict warehouse.
Richard Murphy, director of the practice, says that he is ‘very pleased with his practice’s first large scale office and hotel project’. The design aims to ‘reduce the bulk of the building’ to make it less imposing from street level. This was achieved by a projecting cornice which simultaneously hides the fifth storey and ‘relates the two buildings together’.
Commenting further, he claims that the commercial offices and 185-bedroom hotel ‘will generate an economic impact in the formerly neglected south end of Union street’.
