RIBA president vows to investigate allegations made against RMJM

RIBA president Angela Brady has vowed to ‘get to the bottom’ of a landmark complaint to the institute filed against RMJM

The promise – breaking institute silence over RMJM – comes more than a year after past presidents called on Portland Place to expel studios which repeatedly fail to pay staff.

In an unprecedented move, the outgoing president called on current and former RMJM staff to come forward with any concerns they have over the beleaguered practice.

This week a former RMJM employee registered an official complaint with RIBA after failing to receive more than £10,000-worth of salary, expenses, pension contributions and redundancy pay.

The unnamed ex-staffer said: ‘For several years now RMJM has not paid the majority of its staff on the date that salaries are due. [Staff] were assured … it was a temporary situation. However, the situation has continued in this way pretty much for the past three years.’

If substantiated, the allegations could see the former AJ100 topper booted off RIBA’s chartered practice programme and leading figures potentially facing charges of unacceptable professional conduct.

Brady said: ‘I will take a personal interest in this. We’ve got to look after our members and ensure practices are working within the law.’

We must be careful that we first check any complaint/query to see of there it is substantiated before we accuse any practice/member of wrong-doing, in accordance with the general legal principle of ‘innocent until proven guilty’.  Unfortunately this means that at times we cannot make instant judgements/statements against individual practices, but we can publicly re-iterate the RIBA’s (and current and immediate-past Presidents’) strong stand on fair payment and treatment of all employees of RIBA Chartered Practices and wider profession.
