Beautifully crafted buildings, a strong focus on low-carbon design, and innovative re-use and extension characterise the best of workplace architecture this year
The geographical spread and the range of work is broad: the Angel Building’s clever retrofit ‘redefines the sector’, the judges said, and the Shettleston Housing Association offices in Glasgow and the Hackney Service Centre in London embody contemporary civic architecture at its best. Much of it doesn’t come cheap however. Bourne Hill Offices in Salisbury cost £3,810 per square metre, and the Rothschild Foundation almost £5,000 per square metre. Rory Olcayto

Citation The form of the building responds in a creative way to the constraints and opportunities of the site on an industrial estate in Grantham. The use of timber for both structure and cladding was of course a given, but the architect has added lightweight concrete elements hung from the ceiling to boost the mass of the building and save energy.

The Angel Building, Allford Hall Monaghan Morris

Citation This speculative office redefines the sector. The new building retains the original structure while infilling much of the old courtyard and adding new office and retail girth around its perimeter, thereby both unlocking the development and making it more intimate with the surrounding streets. Hackney Service Centre, Hopkins Architects

Citation The architectural proposition is disarmingly straightforward. A U-shaped plan, five storeys high, opens onto a huge, barrel-vaulted, glazed atrium. Each floor plate is open plan with side wings that contain informal meeting areas, and tea points. The entire building is drenched in daylight, the antithesis of a closed defensive civic headquarters.
Fitzroy Street and Maple Place, Duggan Morris Architects

Citation Two existing office buildings modified to create two joined but separately lettable spaces, each with a similar character. The simplicity and clarity of the spaces created, and the sheer elegance of the inserted elements - red-brown balustrading, light fittings and way-finding against white backgrounds - are the result of an almost obsessive attention to detail.

Contract value £910,000, £2,321/m²
Citation The Cumbrian organisation Grizedale Arts is home to an ongoing project in which a series of architectural insertions enable, inspire and respond to making and thinking about art. Boldly sculpted ceilings define space with light inside an ancient farmhouse and its outbuildings. A split-level section resolves the meeting of old and new, providing enjoyable vistas and connections between living, working and eating.

Citation The original building, a single-storey concrete, steel and glass construction created as offices for Ove Arup & Partners by Peter Foggo in 1963, has been adapted for contemporary working patterns. A new linear extension sits alongside, connecting with the historic garden wall and directly abutting the existing pavilion. Rated BREEAM excellent.
Shettleston Housing Association Offices, Elder and Cannon Architects

Citation This reworking of Glasgow’s Co-operative Hall provides additional accommodation for the housing association and brings together two distinct built forms, a century apart. The extension also adds a new roof terrace to the staff facilities. The clutter of the original spaces has been cleared with the insertion of timber pods and glass meeting rooms.

The Rothchild Foundation, Windmill Hill

Citation A series of buildings constructed on the site of a former dairy farm located in Waddesdon Manor in Aylesbury. The Rothschild Foundation’s archive is housed in a naturally cooled building with great thermal mass and insulation, avoiding the need for air conditioning and forced humidity control. The diagonally incised zinc roofs add a richness to the simple architectural forms.
Bourne Hill Offices, Stanton Williams

Contract value £15.8 million, £3,810/m²
Citation The project involved the restoration and repair of an existing building, the creation of new public gardens and, wonderfully, the clearing away of car parking from the entrance, producing a new civic space for Salisbury. Even though much of the accommodation is technically for private, back-office functions, this is a truly civic building.
