RIBA Council members were set to take a back seat to a new board made up of senior members and staff which will take control of the institute's policy and strategy this week. The constitutional change was due to be voted through at this week's council meeting. 'The council should be relieved of routine business, leading to meetings more focused on the prime issues for architects and big decisions for the institute, ' said chief executive Richard Hastilow.

'Hopefully this will encourage more interest in joining the council.'
