Revealed: Heatherwick and BIG's proposed new Google HQ

The first images of Thomas Heatherwick and BIG’s proposed new headquarters for Google in California have been released

The AJ revealed that the 2012 Olympic Cauldron designer and Danish starchitect Bjarke Ingels had been appointed by the tech giant to work on the project at Mountain View last July. The pair are working with British engineers AKT II and Atelier Ten.

The scheme, which will house 20,000 Google staff and has been dubbed North Bayshore, features moveable ‘lightweight block-like structures’ sitting under large translucent canopies described by Ingels as a ‘simple, super-transparent membrane’.

A spokesman for Google said: ‘Today we’re submitting a plan to redevelop four sites—places where we already have offices but hope to significantly increase our square footage—to the Mountain View City Council. It’s the first time we’ll design and build offices from scratch and we hope these plans….will lead to a better way of working.’

Google is currently also collaborating with AHMM on a new £1billion base at King’s Cross in London. However, due to delays a number of ‘exasperated’ architects who spent years working on the flagship office have recently left the practice.

Comment on North Bayshore

Thomas Heatherwick, founder, Heatherwick Studio:
‘This is an opportunity to not only create a new home for the world’s most innovative company, but also to make a vibrant piece of town at the same time as protecting and enhancing the local natural habitat.

‘Bringing the design team together from Heatherwick Studio and BIG means we’ve developed even more exciting solutions that neither would have arrived at alone and we look forward to making them a reality.’

Bjarke Ingels, founder, BIG-Bjarke Ingels Group:
‘Silicon Valley has been an engine of innovation driving technological evolution and global economy. So far the majority of these vast intellectual and economical resources have been confined to the digital realm – Google North Bayshore expands this innovative spirit into the physical realm.

‘Together with Heatherwick Studio and Google we have set out to imagine the work environments of future Googlers to be as adaptable, flexible and intelligent as the rest of Google’s wide spanning portfolio – rather than an insular corporate headquarter, Google North Bayshore will be a vibrant new neighbourhood of Mountain View.’
