Designs by Grimshaw and Arup for the proposed new HS2 terminal at Euston station have been revealed
The images were released as HS2 Ltd, the firm behind the construction of the railway, announced that the plans at Euston will be carried out in phases, with the HS2 element finishing in 2033.
Plans for the rest of the station are to be carried out separately, putting paid to expectations that a comprehensive redevelopment could take place.
Ruper Walker, Euston development director for HS2 Ltd and Network Rail, said: ‘Euston needs to become a station that both the nation and local community can be proud of – and share.’
HS2 is preparing an amendment to the hybrid bill granting powers to build the railway, which is currently making its way through parliament. It is also working on a new environmental impact assessment relating to the Euston work.
The new plan will see six new platforms built on land to the west of the current station, to serve trains running on the new HS2 line to Birmingham from 2026.
Then work will begin on providing five new tracks within the existing station, to serve trains running on the second branch of the track to Manchester, due to open in 2033.
Leader of Camden Council Sarah Hayward said criticised the fact that no funding or plans for the remainder of the existing station have been announced.
She said: ‘Comprehensive development at Euston with tracks on one level can help remedy this and provide a world-class transport hub, yet the short-sightedness of these plans is threatening to let down Londoners on all these fronts.’
