Record numbers expected at RIAS conference

  • Comment

A record number of visitors are expected to this year's rias congress, which starts today in Glasgow to coincide with the year of architecture and design. Earlier this week, there were 600 pre-bookings for today, 800 for Friday, and 300-400 delegates for Saturday.

Four honorary fellowships of the rias will be awarded: to Scottish Parliament architect Enric Miralles; Lord Rogers of Riverside; Scottish-born and educated James Gibson of Australian practice Denton Corker Marshall - which teamed up with Allan Murray Architects as a finalist for the Scottish parliament; and to Sydney Opera House architect Jorn Utzon. Utzon's fellowship will be received by his grandson, Jeppe Utzon, also an architect.

Few of the delegates to the conference will be representing the riba, however. Neither the current nor future president will be there.
