Make Architects has laid off 14 per cent of its London workforce, shedding 17 staff last week

The move is understood to follow the down-scaling of the $4 billion King Abdullah Sports City project in Saudi Arabia which also affected a host of other practices. It is understood Arup took the biggest hit.

The practice was unable to confirm how many staff had been working on the project however Make founder Ken Shuttleworth said: ‘[The] recent loss of a large contract has required us to make this incredibly difficult decision.’

He added: ‘We have endeavoured to redeploy our team onto alternative jobs, but like many other businesses, we are trying to steer our way through the market and so to ensure the long-term health of our business we need to match our resources to our current and forecasted workload.’

The practice headcount has fallen from 122 to 105.

Last month the company posted worrying trading figures which showed turnover had plummeted by 47 per cent in the financial year ending 31 December 2009 - dropping from £18.4million in 2008 to £9.7million.
