Rammed earth first for alternative technology HQ

  • Comment

The Centre for Alternative Technology in Machynlleth, West Wales, which opens this week is being claimed as the UK's first building made with structural rammed earth walls. The opening of the Pat Borer and David Leadesigned building marks the 25th anniversary of the e o-group, which is renowned for its experimentation with alternative sources of energy production.

For the past quarter century, buildings on the site have been constructed using traditional post-and-beam timber-frame construction. For this landmark project the architects have created a £630,000 structure which uses concrete-free hydraulic lime foundations, lowgrade Welsh sheep's wool and pulped newspaper as insulation.
