A massive Percy Thomas Partnership design to modernise a factory for the new Mini car is under way.
The £100 million Rover scheme will mean four new factories north of the Longbridge plant in the Midlands, each with a footprint of around 200m x 100m. They will be used to hammer out metal parts for the new Mini, due to appear in April 2000.
A new body-pressing shop and body-building factory will also be built. The existing paint shop and car assembly areas will be refurbished and extended.
Demolition work is going ahead for the project, which it is hoped will secure 6000 jobs in the area.
