This competition-winning scheme comprises a traditional 350-seat theatre, 150-seat studio theatre and gallery with cafe and restaurant facilities attached.
At competition stage the brief required the retention and incorporation of the existing elliptical Rose Theatre building. However, at an a early stage in the design development this was proved to offer poor value, and so the current proposal demolishes and replaces the Rose Theatre while retaining the overall form and concept of the original competition scheme.
Because accessibility into and out of the building was a key element of the competition brief, a close physical relationship was established between the building and its surrounding landscape through the use of split levels and external ramped galleries.
The scheme has been developed with the client to RIBA Work Stage C and is currently under review by an independent arts consultant prior to the college submitting an application to the National Lottery (Arts Council of England).
