Cloud-based Sefaira Concept offers a cost-effective approach to sutainable building design at concept stage
Launched in July 2012, Sefaira Concept is a web-based energy analysis software designed to calculate energy and water usage, carbon emissions, renewable energy potential and utility costs. The programme makes it easy to incorporate passive strategies at an early stage, reducing a building’s reliance on engineering active systems. Practices such as Sheppard Robson, PRP and ZedFactory are currently utilizing the software.
Sefaira Concept can be used on a PC, Mac, iPad and, believe it or not, iPhone. It allows professionals to share their projects in a web-based platform without worrying about version differences or compatibility issues. Drop-down windows and tick boxes provide a user-friendly interface enabling the programme to be used straight away without any special training. Although the programme delivers quick results, these are within a 5% margin difference compared to competing systems.
Sefaira Concept analyses multiple design options simultaneously to facilitate informed design decisions.
Models are created in SketchUp and then uploaded in Sefaira Concept. The project location is set up using Google maps, which also provides the weather data. Thermal transmittance values along with orientation, shading devices, renewable technologies, glazing ratios, water recycling and natural ventilation can be set up in bundles to test different combinations.
In summary, Sefaira Concept provides:
- Quick feedback on energy use, carbon emissions, utility costs and renewable technologies at early design
- Comparison of multiple design options
- Centralised project data accessible to entire project team
- Easy to understand reports to communicate design ideas to the client
Sefaira’s annual license fee is £1,200, which includes training, updates and unlimited usage.
