Hanson Bath & Portland Stone won four major awards at the Millennium Stone Awards. These wins prove the quality and variety of its stone for application in both new-build and restoration work. Liaison with clients and architects at early stages of design is one of the company's strengths.

New build - award Guildhall Yard East, King Street, Architect/designer - Dick Gilbert Scott of WS Atkins Stone supplier - Hanson Bath & Portland Stone Stone used - Portland Coombefield Roach limestone and Portland Coombefield Whitbed limestone.

The new Portland stone cladding is supported via concrete nibs, load-bearing and restraint stainless steel bracketry, from a cast in situ reinforced concrete frame. The stonework was designed to be loadbearing from ground floor up to the large cornices, requiring thicker stone sections than usual on a cladding project.

Judges' comments The judges found this building met all the criteria they had set for the category. The choice of stone, bold detailing and the craftsmanship in execution result in a building that will stand for many generations at the heart of the City of London. It will form an outstanding backdrop for those great occasions that take place within the Guildhall Yard.
