Precipitous events and melting moments

Where has all the snow gone? I read that 'the power generated from hydro-electric schemes in January and February fell by 41.1 per cent compared with the same period last year due to precipitation falling as snow rather than rain' (AJ 12.4.01). Yes, I know that one inch of rain is equivalent to several inches of snow, but we certainly have had plenty of 'precipitation'. Didn't that snow eventually melt, or did it all blow off into the North Sea before it had a chance to do so? I think we should be told.
