Practices battle for £450m PFI hospital

  • Comment

BDP and Sheppard Robson are among six practices on design teams bidding for the redevelopment of the Royal Liverpool University Hospital in Liverpool

The PFI project will replace the 1960s teaching hospital with a new building featuring en-suite single rooms and improved public transport access.

BDP with Balfour Beatty is bidding against Horizon and The Hospital Co. The Horizon consortium features Sheppard Robson, John Cooper Associates and Spanish practices Aidhos Architects and Lamela Architects.

The Hospital Co design team includes American-based practices NBBJ Architects and HKS.

Tony Bell, chief executive at the hospital’s trust, said: ‘We are delighted to have such a strong group of bidders and are looking forward to working with them.

‘It is very important for us to make sure we identify the best possible construction partner, so the people of Merseyside and beyond have a new hospital of which they can be proud.’

The government on 17 June announced backing for the scheme. A preferred bidder will be unveiled next summer and the project is expected to start on site early in 2012.
