PROS: Modest power requirements An intuitive and easy-to-use interface

Spell-checker CONS: For Macs only PRICE: £699 Further information: PRD Creative Software Consultants on 01902 755 293RATING: ***

PowerCADD 2000 is the latest incarnation of this rare Mac-only CAD application. New features include File Preview in the Open Dialog box, to help identify files from previous sessions especially easily. The new Area Window tool quickly takes off the exact area and perimeter values of an object, and the new Symbol Data function tags data to objects, so it can be extracted to create reports for space-planning needs and project budget planning. Text handling is much improved.

PowerCADD 2000 introduces the Red Snapping Rectangle for those who prefer working with the one-button mouse, making advanced snapping and selecting easier. New global-origin co-ordinates and ruler indicators improve accuracy and dimensional assistance. Interactive fillet works with the Edit Window to allow entry of diameter or radius for created fillets.

Engineered Software says: 'PowerCADD 2000 continues the tradition of providing powerful CAD tools behind an intuitive and easy-to-use interface. Think of it as having racecar performance with luxury upholstering. The ability to further customise PowerCADD and make it work to suit your needs rather than you work to suit its needs, saves you time and money.'

If like me you are dyslexic (or if you just cannot spell to save your life), the new Spell Checker will help out; it allows customisation as well. PowerCADD 2000 cleans up the interface by grouping tools under other related tools, creating more powerful palettes and creating more drawing space, unlike Autocad with its billions of separate tool buttons. You can customise the tool palettes and even create your own palettes easily.

PowerCADD 2000 continues the tradition of offering excellent file import/export support and expands to include newer versions and new formats. Its system requirements are incredibly modest - any version of a Power Macintosh with OS 8.5 or higher, only 4Mb of RAM (8Mb recommended), and a PostScript output device for printing, LaserWriter driver 6.0 or later.
