Populous unveils Horse Guards volleyball arena plans

[FIRST LOOK] Populous has revealed plans to transform the Horse Guards Parade in central London into a temporary beach volleyball arena for the 2012 Olympics and Paralympics

Within the space of six weeks in 2012, Populous will transform the historic parade ground into a temporary structure with outdoor seating for 15,000 people.

The design, produced by architects and engineers from Populous and Atkins, will include a theatre-in-the-round lower bowl and a three-sided upper bowl.

Outdoor seating will also have lighting for evening competitions and broadcasting facilities.

Jeff Keas, principle at Populous, said: ‘The temporary structure itself is similar in size and scale to Wimbledon’s Centre Court.’

Like the upper tiers of the Olympic Stadium - also designed by Populous - the venue can be reassembled for use in other locations.
