Populous showcases newly completed Australian Open arena

Sports specialist Populous has revealed this video of its recently completed Margaret Court Arena in Melbourne - the venue for the Australian Open Tennis Championships which began this week

The ‘boutique, multi-purpose’ all-weather venue is the latest phase of the redevelopment at Melbourne and Olympic Parks.

This £97million (Aus $183million) building, which has taken three years to build, houses 7,500 seats and features an opening roof.

According to the AJ100 practice, which has designed the scheme with local practice NH Architecture, the architectural form was derived ‘from an understanding of key individual design elements; roof, bowl, concourse and the undercroft’.

The result, says Populous, is a ‘cohesive architectural form conceived as a container, where the seating bowl becomes the key architectural expression allowing concourse areas to be developed independently’.
