Populous’ mega-church starts on site in Manilla

Work has begun on a 50,000-seat indoor venue for religious meetings in the Philippines designed by Populous

Described by the practice as the world’s largest indoor arena, the building in Manilla, was commissioned by Philippine Christian movement Iglesia Ni Cristo and is scheduled to complete in time for the group’s centenary in 2014.

The building will accommodate ‘major church gatherings’ but will also be used for sports and concerts.

Andrew James, project director and Populous senior principal, said: ‘The building’s capacity pushes the boundary of Arena design and will eventually establish itself as the world’s largest indoor arena. The form uses simple geometry to create an elegant appearance, while also giving the venue a powerful presence within its setting.’

The £131 million project was engineered by Buro Happold and is being built by Hanwha Engineering and Construction in the Philippine city of Ciudad de Victoria.
