Technical upgrade of a power plant in Priolo, Sicily, prompted the owner to commission a facade redesign that would turn it into an architectural highlight. Architect Michele De Lucchi called for a translucent building material with little weight, high wind resistance, toughness to stress and elasticity - criteria all met by polycarbonate Makrolon multi UV 3X/25-25 from Bayer. The material was cut to lengths of 1 x 6m and within three months more than 32 tonnes of sheet were installed, giving a filigree look that conveys lightness and openness. The transparent layer withstands temperatures of up to 120°C and the UV coating protects against the impact of weather and UV rays. A technical expert from Bayer Polymers was on site during the entire construction process, allowing any problems to be solved quickly. Makrolon has now been commissioned for the modernisation of a second plant.
