Political investment may put mocker on listing

  • Comment

The Birmingham Free Libra of 1879 was listed. It was ju that the council - in the 197 not the most conservation-con scious authority - initial forgot to obtain Listed Buildin Consent when it decided demolish it. I gave evidence the Public Inquiry into the LB application in 1973. The conse vationists lost, but it was turning point in local opinio and policy.

Thirty years on, with the po sibility of its replacement bein listed in turn, we have clear gone through a generation cycle of architectural appreci tion. Were the Central Library be listed, and were there to b another public inquiry, I wou certainly consider giving ev dence in favour of the librar But with so much politic investment being put into th proposed new Eastside library somehow can't see it happenin Joe Holyoak, Birmingham
