PMT lands Lewis Carroll wonderjob

  • Comment

Purcell Miller Tritton (PMT) has won the commission to design the new Lewis Carroll interpretation centre in Daresbury, Cheshire.

The centre will be housed in a 55 sq m extension to the Grade II*-listed All Saints Church – the church where the author of Alice in Wonderland was baptised and at which his father (Charles Dodgson) was also a priest from 1827 to 1843.

The pastor’s third child, Carroll was born in the nearby parsonage in Newton-by-Daresbury.

Although the church boasts a number of stained-glass windows featuring characters from Alice in Wonderland, the new extension will be the first dedicated centre to the author and will become a key focal point on the ‘Carroll trail’.

The new addition to the Gothic revival-style church will contain a multi-use display area/ meeting room, lavatory and kitchen and will include ‘some internal reordering to the existing church’.

Mark Goldspink, chief executive of PMT said: ‘This is a really interesting and unique project to be awarded.

‘We will produce a design that is both sympathetic to the existing structure but is also individualistic and inspiring something truly fitting to commemorate the man who created Alice in Wonderland.’

A previous scheme had been drawn up by the church’s architect Graham Holland Associates (see plans attached right) however it is understood the PMT proposals would be ‘radically different’ to the original project.

Backed by the Heritage Lottery Fund, the team hopes to submit the submit the scheme for planning by the end of October 2009. Completion is scheduled for the end of October 2010.
