[First look] PLP Architecture has submitted plans for this £2.1 million visitor information kiosk on Oxford Street in central London
Situated on the corner of Old Cavendish Street and Oxford Street, the 174m² structure is designed to ‘welcome and orientate’ visitors to the shopping district.
Backed by New West End Company – an organisation representing 600 of area’s businesses – the pavilion will feature a café and lavatories with staff specially trained to provide an ‘ultimate shopping experience’ for all nationalities.
Karen Cook, PLP partner, said: ‘As a new focal point on London’s most prominent shopping street, the proposed visitor pavilion is designed to welcome over 250,000 people who visit Oxford Street daily.
‘With a soaring roof making innovative use of boat design technology and by providing a range of public facilities, it will transform an underutilized space.’
Richard Dickinson, New West End Company chief executive added: ‘These are tough times for the public sector and both retailers and landowners want to play their part to help ensure that London’s West End continues to improve and is ready to welcome the 1 million additional visitors anticipated during the Olympic Games.
‘This unique development will welcome and orientate shoppers around the World’s most famous retail district, with Olympic visitors set to boost the West End retail economy by £100 million during Games time.’
