Adding new facilities to a Grade I listed building is never straightforward, and in meeting the requirements of the Disability Discrimination Act at Blundell's School in Devon, there were many considerations regarding what was permissible. Improving accessibility was a key aim, and the school chose Gartec platform access lifts travelling inside a smooth steel shaft, which could accommodate a wheelchair and attendant within the footprint of just 1,600 x 1,375mm. Operation is simple, with large mushroom-type buttons.
