Planning consent

John Thompson & Partners has won planning consent for this residential waterfront scheme at Gunwharf Quays in Portsmouth Harbour. The architect won a limited competition to a design brief set by the client, Berkeley Festival Waterfront Company, in conjunction with English Heritage. This followed heavy criticism leading to the withdrawal by the overall masterplanner HGP Greentree Allchurch Evans, of its application for this part of the site, which includes the Vulcan Building, a scheduled ancient monument within a conservation area. The Thompson design has a brick facade sitting above a continuous colonnade, and frames the Vulcan building. Penthouses, composed of panels of render and glazing, are set back, creating roof terraces.
