KPF remains the only architect working for the Pinnacle skyscraper client on new plans for the stalled skyscraper
The high-profile studio is overseeing a major review of the £800 million development and remains the client’s only architect on the job – insiders have told the AJ.
A source said KPF has been contracted to look at how the spiralling skyscraper could be ‘value engineered’ or, more probably, completely redrawn.
Progress on the City skyscraper ground to a halt 14 months ago amid a legal wrangle with contractors Brookfield Multiplex and in recent weeks a raft of practices are understood to have floated potential alternatives for the 288-metre-tall scheme.
One rival bidder, Ken Shuttleworth, whose practice Make has pitched a ‘simpler’ skyscraper design, told The Guardian the original tower proposal was ‘too complicated to build because each piece of glass is a different size’.
KPF’s review – which followed a settlement with Brookfield Multiplex in January – includes a ‘root and branch redesign’ as its preferred option, the source said.
The AJ has also learned that new proposals could be taller than the original 288m-tall scheme close to Tower 42 and Foster + Partners’ Gherkin.
Client Pinnacle No1 Ltd – which is 90 per cent owned by Sedco and 10 per cent by project development managers Arab Investments – is expected to reveal its intentions within the next two weeks.

The concrete core, which first appeared above ground in 2011, still stands abandoned at around the seventh floor.
In January this year Brookfield Multiplex settled a multi-million pound legal dispute over the scheme paving the way for its restart.
A spokesman said: ‘The Pinnacle No 1 Limited announces that it has secured finance to continue the Pinnacle project over the next two to three years with an extension of the HSH Nordbank loan. It has also reached agreement with Brookfield Multiplex which will see the two companies to continuing to work together on the project going forward. The Pinnacle No 1 Limited will initiate a review of the scheme with Brookfield Multiplex and will make a further statement following the completion of this review.’
