Piercy Conner unveils ‘pared-back’ houses for Bloomsbury

  • Comment

[FIRST LOOK + PLAN] Piercy Conner Architects has won permission for this three-townhouse scheme in the Bloomsbury Conservation Area, central London

Practice partner Stuart Piercy described the decision as a ‘rare accomplishment in this conservative neighbourhood’ and for such ‘an extemely sensitve site’. Surrounded by listed buildings, the brick and timber houses in Wakefield Street overlooking St Georges Gardens for developer Great Marlborough Estates boast top-lit walnut staircases.

Piercy added: ‘Much of our recent work deals with particularly difficult or sensitive context, often inserting contemporary but respectful new buildings into historical settings.

‘As a practice we are certainly very interested in context and particularly engaging with the contrast of new and old. I am aware it is fairly unusual for a young practice to focus on conservation and historical buildings but I am very excited by what might develop.’
