British Gypsum's Building Test Centre has become one of the first centres in the UK with the capability to test partitions up to 5m high, following extensive work to the main fire-test furnace at its East Leake laboratory. The work is in preparation for more stringent European firetest methods which, according to British Gypsum, may be about 10-15 per cent more severe than the current BS 476. The new furnace is intended to provide cost savings on projects including cinemas, retail units and leisure buildings, where partition height is typically 5m and over.
