Foster and Arup's difficulties over the Millennium Bridge are nothing compared to what happened when Xerxes' first set of pontoon bridges across the Hellespont went hideously wrong.

One bridge had papyrus cables, another made from flax; both were destroyed by a storm. Xerxes had the Hellespont whipped, fetters thrown into it, and the overseers of the bridges beheaded. for some reason the designers of the new bridge were successful.
