The Author's Club has awarded its £750 Sir Banister Fletcher Award for the best book on architecture or the fine arts in 1997 to Paul Oliver for his Encyclopaedia of Vernacular Architecture of the World.

The jury said the £695, three-volume book published by Cambridge University Press, which brings together 750 contributors from over 80 countries, impressed with the high standard of text and illustration, and 'Dr Oliver's insistence upon treating the subject as the product of place and culture rather than as a mere catalogue of art objects'.

Anthony Wells-Cole's Art and Decoration in Elizabethan and Jacobean England (Yale University Press) was also commended.
