Paul Davis and Partners has replaced John McAslan and Partners on the opening phase of Earls Court’s contentious £8 billion redevelopment
The Pimlico-based studio has been appointed by developer Capital and Counties to ‘tweak and enhance’ the opening segment of its Seagrave Road redevelopment scheme in west London.
Detailed planning was granted for more than 800 homes on the Seagrave Road car park site in March last year. The original planning application was by McAslan with Davis designing houses on the site’s western edge.
Davis has since been selected to oversee ‘minor material changes’ to the project’s initial phase – comprising 237 homes on the site’s northern edge.
Capital and Counties’ Mike Hood said: ‘Paul Davis and Partners design very nicely detailed buildings. The proposals are now of a higher quality in terms of façade.’
He added: ‘We didn’t want to do something that ten years down the line looks dated. We are using stone so it lasts 100 to 150 years.’
Seagrave Road is the first part of Capital and Counties’ £8billion Terry Farrell-masterplanned regeneration of the area.
Local councils Hammersmith and Fulham and Kensington and Chelsea have both approved the 28-hectare scheme – which replaces both Earls Court exhibition centres and two nearby housing estates – despite entrenched opposition from residents threatened with relocation. London mayor Boris Johnson has however yet to rubber stamp the development.
Around 760 households from the West Kensington and Gibbs Green Estate are expected to be rehoused in the Seagrave road redevelopment.
Practices which worked on the masterplan included Allies and Morrison, Chris Dyson Architects, Benoy, KPF, Make, John McAslan + Partners, Patel Taylor Architects, Paul Davis + Partners, and Studio Egret West.
In 2011 Farrell suggested more than 100 architects could work on the enormous regeneration over the coming decades.
Asked about future design appointments for the Seagrave Road scheme, Hood said: ‘We are quite happy with the team but with a scheme of this size there will be opportunities to introduce new team members.’
