The school’s radial design has a ‘gathering place’ at the centre and intends to provide ‘excellent and flexible’ teaching facilities.
The scheme aims to achieve a BREEAM ‘Very Good’ rating by incorporating natural ventilation into the design for day and night-time cooling. In addition, biomass boilers will be used to generate an undisclosed portion of the facility’s heating requirements and the building’s cladding will be timber. It is anticipated that the building will also have a brown roof - soil coated to encourage local biodiversity over a number of years.
The Essex Design Initiative (EDI) has classed it as an ‘Exemplar’ project, the first to achieve this category since the initiative’s launch in 2008.
Passmores School is being procured through the SMARTE EAST contractor’s framework by Essex County Council. It is due to start on site in January 2010 with completion estimated for September 2011.
