Outside experts need not be on RIBA board

In your news item 'RIBA Council votes itself out of a job'(AJ 22.02.01) you correctly reported that I voted against the idea of 'introducing outside members to the board'.

I am wholly in favour of the new board seeking and obtaining outside assistance from any source it thinks appropriate.

What I objected to was the notion that those providing assistance from outside should become full members of the board. I cynically suspect that such assistance will be offered by those who see 'director of RIBA' as an addition to their list of directorships.

I could not vote in support of the outside assistance without voting that the assistance would result in full membership.

I am happy to discuss my concerns with any RIBA member who cares to get in touch with me on 0141 221 0140.

Jim Cuthbertson, RIBA councillor, Glasgow
