The Labour member for Thurrock, Andrew Mackinlay, tried to trip up Peter Mandelson in the House last week, by asking what events were planned for the evening of 31 December 2000. Mandelson replied: 'I am tempted to say that my hon Friend should give us a break before asking questions about the closing ceremony.' Oops! Mackinlay said he was 'somewhat disappointed' by the reply 'bearing in mind the fact that the eve of the millennium is the last day of December 2000 and the first day of the millennium is 1 January 2001'. Quite right, of course, but is this what we pay mps to worry about?
