Out in the cold

To protect the Nottbeck fountain in Sweden's Kesturori city from the harsh winters, the city council has arranged for it to be covered with a striking 4.5m curved glass cover, demountable in sections for easy removal in the summer.

The structure consists of an inner layer of 6mm vandal-resistant toughened safety glass, laminated with an outer layer of Pilkington Activ self-cleaning glass. The top and bottom of the dome are decorated with sandblasted designs by Finnish graphic designer Sauli Iso-Lõhteenmõki, and is made more prominent at night through the use of uplighters.
