The brief from client Fisher Meredith Solicitors Practice in Stockwell, South London, was to provide a concept that would modify its legal-aid image by turning its 15-year old chaotic environment into a more lively and practical space with a comfortable reception area for clients and children. Due to the low budget, basic materials had to be used, such as painted mdf board, treated fibrous ceiling tiles, timber for the bench and the children's play platform. The budget figure for the 6.9m2 area was £25,000.
GREGORY PHILLIPS ARCHITECTS
gpa has refurbished existing premises for the production company Rose Hackney Barber, in Kingly Court, Soho, London. Reorganisation of the ground- floor office spaces has achieved a new reception area twice the size of the old. The design approach was to offer visitors and employees an experience of sophisticated materials and to create a space with a specific quality of light. All furniture was custom-designed. Services, control panels and switches are contained in the reception desk, leaving the plain white walls undisturbed. Daylight is diffused through silk blinds and the room is lit with reflected light. The contract value was approximately £16,000.
FINCH MACINTOSH ARCHITECTS
The mews coach house of Osborne Place originally comprised one stable loft between four terraced houses. The section of the loft strictly conditioned the roof profile and finish of the new studio. Excavating into the slope where it falls towards the mews allowed a split-level relationship between the end of the garden and the carport, which forms a brick plinth to the timber-framed and clad studio. The roof of a garden store provides a generous terrace to the south. The studio is heated with a wood-burner and fitted with a wash-hand basin. The main contractor was Dever Builders and the cost was £30,100.
