RIBA councillor Iain Meek has suggested an alternative to the proposed restructuring arrangements. Meek proposes either the reduction of council to 14 regionally elected members or a 'rapid-response solution'whereby council members use the latest tele-conferencing facilities to meet remotely when a policy decision is needed urgently. A third suggestion involves the creation of an alternative organisation - the Republican Institute of British Architects.

Meek has offered to be its first director general with a salary of £100,000.
