Not everyone will see through the facade

Astragal does not seem to be in favour of the photographic reproductions of the Doge's Palace and the Clocktower (AJ 19.3.98), but I think they are a magnificent gesture by Venice towards the tourist who is only able to visit La Serenissima once. If you try to go every year - as I do - you can bear the fact that some particularly important building is covered up with scaffolding, because you will see it next time; if you only go once, how nice to be able to photograph it as if it were actually there, even though covered with scaffolding. My recent photograph of the Clocktower - admittedly taken deliberately, in order to create that impression - has been shown to many people who have quite failed to notice that it is not the real thing.
