[First look + project data] Nick Willson Architects has released these images of plans to ‘Terroirst proof’ a 1960s tower block in Waterloo, London
The scheme in Sandell Street for the Union Jack Club - a hotel, conference centre and private members club for serving and ex-serving military personnel - will overhaul the existing entrance and ground floor of the brick.
The project features a new copper-clad canopy, entrance and lift.
The architect’s view - Nick Willson
We were asked to produce a feasibility study following work carried out by QCIC security services due the government having advised that the building could be a security risk and vulnerable to terrorist attack.
This gave the client and the design team the opportunity to look at retro fitting the main entrance, lobby and exterior access. Architecturally we proposed a new copper clad element which wraps around the façade forming a new canopy, entrance, lift and screening.
The copper would be solid on the top surface with roof lights and a perforated treatment on the exterior soffits allowing light to be filtered below. Internally the copper element forms a light sculpture and the framework for display areas and two new roof lights which penetrate the back of the plan and link the first floor meeting rooms to the entrance area.
The choice of copper comes from the use of copper in radios, radios being used in communication between all of the services and also the idea that a club is a place for communication between members and the public.
Internally we have opened the area up and propose a new secure area, a café and internet area along with new display and information pieces. A further study will be carried out into the energy use of the facilities and hotel rooms.
