Nicholas Grimshaw & Partners has beaten three practices to design this US$50 million (£35.5 million) electronic media and performing arts centre for the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute near New York. To be built on a hillside overlooking the Hudson River, the 16,000m 2development will feature five performance venues, a 1,200-seat auditorium,400seat recital theatre and a suite of 'experimental'spaces when it opens in autumn 2003.The losing practices were Davies Brody Bond/Lesser, Morphosis and Bernard Tschumi.
