New practices: Mills Power

  • Comment

The latest in a series of practice profiles looking at architects who have recently decided to go it alone either through choice or redundancy

Mills Power, Borough Market, London SE1

Main people: Phyllida Mills, Mark Power

Founded: April 2013

Where have you come from? Mills was a partner with Penoyre & Prasad for eight years. Power has run his own practice, Mark Power Architect, since 2005

What work do you have? We completed our first social infrastructure project, the ‘Jubiloo’ – which has been shortlisted for BCIA and NLA awards – last summer and recently landed planning permission for a neighbourhood Arts Centre in arches below Haggerston Overground station. We have just won planning for a new storey on a terrace of houses in Lewisham and five houses in an old Enfield farmyard.

What are your ambitions? We would like a team large enough to transform the city and small enough for us to know each other. We want to be known for turning ideas into places that love people and that people love.

How optimistic are you? We are enormously optimistic about architecture’s potential to change lives and to be changed by them. A client with vision will look for a creative dialogue with an architect. The most rewarding projects are where the client and architect work directly together, and that’s what we seek to do.

How are you marketing yourselves? Through repeat clients, reputation, recommendations, MIPIM, awareness awards, networking, LinkedIn, Twitter (@PhyllidaM, @markitectpower) and elevator pitches.
