New practices: March & White

  • Comment

The latest in a series of practice profiles looking at architects who have recently decided to go it alone either through choice or redundancy

March & White, Covent Garden, London

Founded:  September 2010

Main people: Elliot March, James White

Where have you come from?
Elliot was previously a project director at Lifschutz Davidson Sandilands, while James was an associate at Stiff & Trevillion Architects. We met while studying architecture at Oxford Brookes University and knew that we would collaborate later on in our careers.

What work do you have and what kind of projects are you looking for?
We are architects and interior designers, focusing on high-end residential, hotel and restaurant projects. We’re also starting to work with leading developers on office fit outs.
Our largest project to date is the conversion of six storeys of a listed terrace on Sussex Gardens near Hyde Park into 63 serviced apartments. We’ve completed five residential projects in London this year as well as the new Peruvian-fusion restaurant LIMA.
We’re currently working on the Coachworks - our most architectural project so far, involving the conversion of an ex-Rolls Royce factory into office spaces and apartments. We’ve just secured planning for 18-20 Headfort Place, North Belgravia, the conversion of a mews house from office to residential use including the addition of a new contemporary roof extension for Grosvenor (see pictured). We’re also working on more luxury residences in India and the Middle East including a Palace and Hotel fit-out.
Much of the work we have completed has been through existing contacts and introductions. It’s exciting being the ‘new kid on the block’ – it gives us a fresh perspective, which can open doors.

What are your ambitions?
We have grown from two to 12 people in just under two years – now we want to consolidate our portfolio and grow steadily, whilst continuing to build our international work-stream in Asia and the Middle-East.

How optimistic are you as a start-up practice?
There are opportunities out there. We started our practice in the middle of the recession and have fared well so far – we don’t see any reason for that to stop! We feel that clients are willing to work with smaller, younger practices who will challenge design conventions.

How are you marketing yourselves?
We’ve invested in a new website and are about to start publishing a newsletter about our work and things that inspire us. We are proud of what we’ve achieved so far – so we’re working hard on getting publicity for our completed projects like LIMA and Sussex Gardens.
