New practices: Edward Williams Architects

The latest in a series of practice profiles looking at architects who have recently decided to go it alone either through choice or redundancy

Edward Williams Architects, Holland Park, London

Main people Miguel Cangueiro da Silva, Laura Carrara-Cagni, Bonnie Chu, Hayley Hammond, Edward Williams

Founded October 2012

Where have you come from?
Most of us worked for several years at Hopkins, where Williams was an equity partner and worked on projects including the University College London Hospitals Macmillan Cancer Centre, Princeton Chemistry Faculty, Glyndebourne Opera House and Goodwood Racecourse.

What are your ambitions?
We want to become a substantial contemporary practice working on large and small projects for end users across sectors.

What work do you have?
A wide range, including healthcare projects such as Whitechapel’s Royal London Hospital masterplans, feasibility studies, office fit-outs and private houses. Our largest project is a 30,000m² in-patient and Proton Beam Therapy facility for UCLH. We are always looking for new, challenging work.

How optimistic are you?
We are optimistic, but are careful as we expand. The recession seems to be losing its grip and more and more people are contacting us with a positive outlook for the next 12 months.

How do you market yourself?
We are mostly focusing on existing contacts while developing a marketing and business plan so we can focus our limited resources on the most fertile areas. Our website is about to be upgraded and we are social media, LinkedIn and YouTube to raise our profile.
