Where have you come from?
David, Tony and Yogesh worked together at LOC Associates. When it merged with Lewis and Hickey in 2006, LOC became the northern office. Dave, Tony and Yogesh established DAY and later Marc and Gary joined from Lewis and Hickey.
What work do you have?
We have experience in healthcare and student accommodation and are working with several NHS Trusts, public and private developers and North East Surrey College of Technology in Surrey – our biggest and most challenging commission to date.
In the past, most of our workload came through referral and recommendation. We haven’t tendered for many projects. Recently, however, we have been invited for selective tenders and competitions, which is better, as we know then that we have a chance.
What are your ambitions?
To continue to grow in a controlled manner. We are a 20-strong studio and are growing steadily. We want to be known for efficient, affordable and sustainable residential design and hands-on, innovative healthcare design that goes beyond everyday design. We want to make a difference and be the best at what we do. We do not want to grow into a large, corporate practice.
What are the biggest challenges facing you as a start-up?
Getting out there and selling ourselves. Not many people know what we can do.
